To Be Or Not To Be – Metal in Question by Mick Michaels of Corners of Sanctuary © 2012 exclusively for theneverendingstage.com we are big fans of these ambassadors of metal and really wish to thank them for shedding light on the state of metal! This is part 2 or 7 for your metal Enjoyment!
In our last installment on the state of Metal, we pondered the possible negative effects divisions, within the Metal genre, could impose on the music’s position and longevity. So much so, that these divisions may become the unit of Metal measure.
Divisions have seemingly begun to make determinations as to what is considered Metal and what is not. As if we don’t have enough to worry about! Metal is facing standardization ‐ not by those who create it but by those who are listening to it.
Those who create have found their sound and look to further it by exploration and discovery – sometimes even by dabbling in other constructs. Remember, last time we offered that Metal is an evolution. Thus, so are those who turn the wheels of its formation evolving.
Metal fans are the best around – dedicated and life‐long. There is no doubt about that. However, there are those who want to keep things in nice and neat, tight little packages. These individuals find it necessary to point fingers, make accusations and totally downplay the music going as far as personally attacking the artist and fans alike.
Don’t believe me? Take a moment or two hours and peruse Youtube. Start with your favorite bands. Scroll down and read through the posted comments – don’t be surprised as you will find more negative commentary from the peanut gallery than anything else.
Those with something to say have countless hours on end of free time to post negativity. Think about how much good could be done with all that energy if just properly applied – like learning to play that dusty guitar that’s been sitting in the corner of your room since you were 13! ☺ Often, comments appear to go to extremes judging what Metal is, not by sound but by look or physical presence.
As if everyone within the Metal community needs to resemble the members of Manowar! Count this author out! Size, shape, gender, race, creed or color have no bearing on defining Metal. Ignorance is bliss and definitely not in short supply. Metal, by its design transcends those limitations and prejudices.
We are the world’s melting pot – a cauldron of twisted little sisters and brothers and some muthers too. Metal is Metal And it has earned the right to be as it is, to do as it does and to live as it lives. There are no hard and fast rules ‐ no perfect little box. That’s what makes Metal alluring – diversity without limitation.
